Severe PIK Flips in Private Credit Fell by More Than Half

What's New

High-risk cash-to-PIK switches at private credit BDCs have fallen for two straight quarters. PRISM Private Markets data counts 47 borrowers with high-severity PIK flips in the second quarter of 2026. The count peaked at 100 at year-end 2025. Reversions to cash pay outnumbered new PIK flips in both of the first two quarters of 2026. Third-quarter filings in November will test whether stress in private credit has turned.

Why It Matters

Most private credit commentary treats rising PIK as a one-way trend. Investors who priced BDC shares and secondary positions on that view are exposed if the decline holds. Lenders and borrowers restored cash interest on more loans than they moved to PIK in Q2. A third quarter of decline would point to a PIK cycle that peaked at the end of 2025.

By The Numbers

  • 57: High-severity flips in Q2 2025, one year before the latest reading.

  • 305: All PIK flips at year-end 2025, the highest count in the past five quarters.

  • 161: Reversions to cash pay in Q2 2026. New PIK flips totaled 150.

  • 26.0%: Share of distress-transition flips that entered non-accrual within four quarters, the highest-risk category PRISM tracks.

What To Watch

  • Watch whether high-severity flips fall below 47 when the Q3 season closes.

  • A third straight quarter with more reversions than flips. That would be the longest run since at least mid-2025.

  • Software and health care services. The two sectors produced 20 of the 47 high-severity flips in Q2.

  • Early filers lean toward the largest private credit BDCs. Sector and lender counts will be complete once more than 90% of funds file, expected around November 16 to 17.

The Wrap

PIK stress in private credit peaked at year-end 2025 and has eased in each quarter since. The trend holds if Q3 high-severity flips stay at or below the Q2 count and reversions keep pace with new flips. It fails if Q3 brings a rebound toward the 100 recorded at year-end. Complete Q3 data arrives by mid-November. Year-end filings in March provide the second test.
